First Look: 2023 Mercedes-AMG C 43

Mercedes-AMG just revealed a revised version of the W206-generation C-Class, which first debuted in 2021. This fiery new sedan, the 2023 Mercedes-AMG C 43, receives a number of changes for the new model year as it loses two cylinders, adds more power, and gains technology first used by the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team.

An electrifying new powerplant

The previous C 43’s 385-horsepower 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 has been replaced by Mercedes-AMG’s M139L engine. The new engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder rated at 402 hp and 369 pound-feet of torque at 5,000 rpm, aided by a 48-volt hybrid system that temporarily generates an additional 13 hp.

A 9-speed, wet dual clutch transmission comes standard as does all-wheel drive that can send up to 69% of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels. Selectable drive modes include “Slippery,” “Comfort,” “Sport,” “Sport +” and “Individual.” Mercedes-Benz says the C 43 runs 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds.

A similar driveline can be found in the CLA 45, GLA 45, and SL 43, but this one comes with a difference.

A more responsive Mercedes

The new AMG C 43 Sedan gets an an electric exhaust-gas turbocharger to improve responsiveness.

Mercedes-Benz claims the C 43 is the world’s first series-production driveline to feature an electric exhaust-gas turbocharger.

“The C-Class has always been an absolute success story for Mercedes-AMG. With the innovative technology of the electric exhaust-gas turbocharger, we are once again significantly increasing the attractiveness of this latest generation,” said Philipp Schiemer, chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

An electric motor is fitted to the turbocharger shaft between the turbine wheel on the exhaust side and the compressor wheel on the intake side. It drives the turbocharger shaft, which then accelerates the compressor wheel before the exhaust gas flows. This helps eliminate turbo lag.

The 2023 Mercedes-AMG C 43 benefits from rear-wheel steering

“The new turbocharging system and the 48-volt on-board electrical system not only contribute to the outstanding driving dynamics of the C 43, but also improve its efficiency. In this way, we are demonstrating the tremendous potential that lies in electrified combustion engines. The standard all-wheel drive, the active rear-axle steering and the quick-shifting transmission all serve to enhance the Driving Performance that is the hallmark of AMG,” Schiemer said.

Other updates

The car is also fitted with rear-wheel steering, turning the rear wheels up to 2.5 degrees in the opposite direction of the fronts at speeds up to 37 mph. Above that, the rear wheels turn up to 0.7 degrees in the same direction. In addition, the variable effort power steering adjusts to the driving mode selected.

Mercedes-AMG also fitted adaptive damping to all four corners, which takes into account the preselected suspension level, the driving style and the condition of the road surface to adjust the ride quality.

As for its exterior wardrobe, the C 43 wears an AMG radiator grille and front bumper, specific air intakes and chrome-plated trim element, matching side sill panels, a revised. rear bumper, and twin-tailpipe trim. The AMG C 43 ride on 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels, although 19- and 20-inch wheels are available.

The inside story

The 2023 Mercedes-AMG C 43’s displays get AMG-specific software for track driving.

Peek inside and you’ll find Mercedes-AMG has gussied up the old girl by trimming the seats in black MB-Tex and microfiber with red contrasting stitching and finished with red seat belts. The driver faces an AMG Performance steering wheel covered in perforated Nappa leather and accompanied by aluminum gearshift paddles.

The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and the 11.9-inch LCD center touchscreen employ various AMG-specific displays. Should you decide to track your car, the C 43 comes with AMG Track Pace, a software package that records 80 vehicle-specific data points such as speed, acceleration, steering angle and braking ten times per second while the car is driven on the track. There is also a lap and sector time display, as well as training and analysis tools. A Head-Up display is optional.

Mercedes-Benz hasn’t released pricing on the C 43, but don’t be surprised if it starts in the low-$60,000 range when it reaches showrooms later this year.
