Lincoln Teases First All-Electric Model Coming April 20

While the world’s luxury brands have been revealing their forthcoming electrification plans, one company has been notably silent: Lincoln Motor Co.

Lincoln offered a couple of short videos teasing its first-ever all-electric model, which appears to be a crossover.

The lack of information is especially apparent given Cadillac’s aggressive media push for the its 2023 Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV, and the fact that dealers will start taking orders on May 19. GM is set to abandon conventional internal combustion engines entirely by 2035, and Cadillac plans to switch entirely to battery power by 2030.

And what of Lincoln?

Monday’s announcement

Lincoln revealed Monday it will debut its first fully electric vehicle April 20, after the New York Auto Show. The announcement’s timing reinforces automakers’ increasing skepticism about auto shows as the most effective way to convey information to the media and consumers. By staging its own event, Lincoln should be able to garner greater attention, without having to fight other OEMs for coverage.

Lincoln Fully Electric Concept Teaser date
Lincoln will introduce its first-ever all-electric model April 20 — just after the NYIAS.

As is increasingly common, Lincoln released a short teaser video to reinforce the point. As you might expect, the short 16-second teaser is very much a tease, revealing a few key styling lines of the vehicle’s exterior, along with the famous Lincoln star logo lit up on what appears to be the side of the vehicle. But the video is a bit too obtuse to make any assumptions about its appearance. Aside from that, there’s little that’s known.

The new model is part of Ford Motor Co.’s plan to spend more than $30 billion to electrify its line-up during the coming decade. While some models will remain, such as the Corsair, others will vanish, including the the current Ford Edge and Lincoln Nautilus.

Electrification is a natural fit for Lincoln’s “Quiet Flight” persona, as an electric motor’s silence and smoothness delivers those qualities while delivering the horsepower and torque that luxury buyers expect.

Lincoln’s current electrified line-up

The Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring is one of two PHEVs the brand offers.

In a world where electric vehicles get all of the attention, it’s understandable that its existing line of plug-in gas electric hybrids isn’t getting the attention they deserve. Lincoln currently offers two plug-in hybrids: the Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring and the Corsair Grand Touring.

The Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring combines a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine with an electric motor, 13.6 kWh battery pack and a 10-speed transmission that generates 494 horsepower and 630 pound-feet of torque and an EPA-estimated range of 494 miles, and 21 miles of pure electric range. Combined mileage is rated at 56 MPGe, and 23 mpg. Prices start at $68,680 for the Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring.

In contrast, the Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring has a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder gas engine and an electric motor that produces 266 hp through a continuously variable automatic transmission and has a range of 466 miles. It’s rated at 78 MPGe and 33 mpg and has an electric-only range of 25 miles. Prices start at $51,595 for the Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring.

Both Grand Touring models are all-wheel drive.

Lincoln’s EV announcement comes as the marque is celebrating its 100th year as a Ford Motor Co. brand. Look for TheDetroitBureau.com to report further news about Lincoln’s new EV in the days ahead.
