EPA Releases Alfa Romeo Tonale Ratings
According to the EPA, the brand-new 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale has a 33-mile electric driving range and a 77 MPGe rating. The Alfa Romeo Tonale has a 360-mile driving range on a full battery charge. Combined fuel economy is 29 mpg.
The company appeared happy with the ratings, which will allow owners to tackle their daily commute without using a lick of gasoline, all the while providing the driving characteristics expected of an Alfa Romeo.
“The Alfa Romeo Tonale represents the beginning of our transformation to greater electrification while staying true to the performance characteristics our customers expect from the brand,” said Larry Dominique, senior vice president and head of Alfa Romeo North America.
Putting that fuel to use
The Tonale is a landmark vehicle for the brand, being its first gas-electric Plug-In Hybrid Electric vehicle, as well as the first new offering five years. Offered in Sprint, Ti and Veloce trim, it gets its power from a 1.3-liter MultiAir turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that powers the front wheels and mates to a 90-kW electric motor on the rear axle that’s powered by a 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery. Together, they produce a healthy 285 horsepower and 347 pound-feet of torque.
But European buyers will get more choice, with the availability of two conventional hybrid Tonales, both using a 1.5-liter gas engine paired with a 48-volt electric motor assist system. The base package makes 130 horsepower and the upgrade 160. But there are no plans to bring either hybrid to the U.S. as their performance is simply not sufficient to meet American buyers’ expectations.
Underneath it all
The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale will fill out what has been a sparse lineup, which currently consists of the Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV. While the brand is known for sports cars, its last product, the 4C Spider, was discontinued in 2020 and not replaced.
Though the Italian SUV has undergone a “strong evolution,” according to Domenico Bagnasco, Alfa’s director of high-performance cars, the Alfa Romeo Tonale’s underpinnings are shared with the comparable-sized Jeep Compass.
The steering mechanism and suspension, which in the Alfa utilizes a McPherson strut design, have also undergone changes. Frequency Selective Damping shock absorbers are used in the standard suspension, although select-valve, dual-stage electronically controlled dampers are optional.
Additionally, the Tonale has a wider track, which improves both its handling and aesthetics and gives the SUV a more athletic, planted look compared to the Jeep model.
Inside, you’ll find a reconfigurable 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen operating the latest Uconnect 5 operating system with wireless versions of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a wireless charging nook.
Prices start at $42,995 for the Sprint, $44,995 for the Ti and $47,495 for the Veloce.
