GMC Going Extreme with First-Ever Canyon AT4X AEV

We got a sense of what the GMC Canyon could do with the launch of the new AT4X model this year. But what if you’re looking to push things to even greater extremes?

The GMC Canyon got a complete redesign for 2023, including the off-road ready AT4X.

That’s where the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV comes in. And General Motors’ truck brand is offering a hint of what’s in store with this first teaser image.

For the moment, GMC isn’t saying much, the statement accompanying this image tersely suggesting, “An even more off-road capable Canyon is coming.” But we’ve been talking to our usual sources and looking out for additional details. Here’s what we know so far.

The AEV Edition will share the same powertrain as the 2023 Canyon AT4X — not a bad move considering the 2.7-liter Turbo High-Output package already makes a solid 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, sending it to all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic gearbox and a 2-speed transfer case.

Ready for more

GMC offered its midsize Canyon with an off-road-ready version, the AT4X.

The 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X already got a 3-inch lift in ground clearance over more conventional versions of the truck. But that’s just where things start. The AEV is expected to boast 11 inches of ground clearance, a significant increase enabled, in part by massive 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT 315/70R17 tires.

Expect plenty of underbody protection, of course, including a front bash plate, as well as skid plates to protect the engine, fuel tank and rear differential.

Now, add new high-clearance front and rear bumpers. That will translate into even more extreme approach, breakover and departure angles — though we’ll have to wait for the hard numbers.

The suspension will retain the AT4X’s Multimatic DSSV dampers — but they’ll be retuned for even more aggressive driving conditions. Hydraulic bump stops will take a little bit of the bang out of hard impacts.

Expect to see the already brawny AT4X body get an even more brawny appearance, as this teaser image suggests. And you can get a good feel for what’s in store by checking out what sibling brand Chevrolet has done to its own midsize truck, the 2024 Colorado ZR2 Bison.

Next in line

This will become the second GMC truck to get the AEV treatment, following the also new-for-2024 version of the full-size Sierra pickup.

The decision to tease the new edition is likely no coincidence considering all the competition coming GMC’s way, starting with the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison.

Just a week ago, Ford officially pulled the wraps off its own extreme machine, the 2024 Ranger Raptor. And Toyota will be unveiling the next-generation Tacoma this week, including a new TRD Pro – and, perhaps, an even more muscular edition.

Expect to see GMC fully reveal the 2024 Colorado AT4X AEV in the coming weeks, with sales set to begin after mid-year.
